UEFA Champions League - Quarter Final Predictions

In my post back in February before the opening kick of the knockout phases, I predicted the following 8 teams would advance: AC Milan, Valencia, Shaktar Donetsk, Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich. Of the 8, I got 5 right. Which really isn't saying much as those 5 were fairly easy to pick. My AC Milan, Valencia, and Bayern Munich picks all proved to be wrong... I think I was picking more with my heart than my brain in each of those. The quarters have been set and so has the bracket for how this thing will play out. UEFA rigged it in a way that says "hey, look, we don't rig these things". With the final being in Wembley, you would think they would slide the 2 big English teams on opposite sides of the bracket so as to have the potential of an epic all English final in front of the English fans. Instead, the "random draw" put the two big remaining English teams, Manchester United and Chelsea, against each other in the quarters. This is the obvious big match-up, with the rest having an obvious favorite. The only other draw that really appeals to me is the Madrid vs Spurs match-up. I think that one is still very one-sided, but who knows.

Here is how I see this round going:

Real Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspurs - This series will be much like the Milan v Spurs match-up in the previous round: Spurs holding on for dear life and praying for a counter. With the first leg in Madrid, you have to think that Spurs will simply try to keep the scoring low and get one late, exactly like they did in Milan. I doubt this works for them. The attach heavy style of Madrid will be too much, even if Ronaldo can't play, and the visitors will be put into a hole. On the return home they will put up a good fight. However, opening play against Madrid is a very dangerous thing to do.

Mardid Advances to the semis

Inter vs Schalke

- This series is very interesting, though should go in favor of the Italian side rather easily. Schalke just sacked their manager not too long ago and is struggling to get points in the German league. A success in this tournament could really save the season for the club, but I just don't see it happening. Inter is finding their stride lately and really has the edge in this thing. The first leg in Milan will be very telling. If Schalke can keep it close, they might have a chance... I just don't see that happening.

Inter Advances to the semis

Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk

- If there was one series I would wager a large amount of money on, it would be this one. Barca is simply the much better side and should be able to dominate this series. I think Shakhtar is going to give them a run for their money, especially considering they have nothing to lose. At the end of the day, though, Barca has just too much talent to not win this series. The one interesting aspect of this series is that the first leg is in Barcelona. If Shakhtar can get an away goal and keep it close, that return leg will be a really open game and fun to watch.

Barca Advances to the semis in a thriller

Manchester United vs Chelsea

- This one is really going to be fun to watch. With so many different story lines and such on the line, the match-up of these two squads is bound to be a thriller. United has struggled a bit lately, but so has Chelsea. Neither team is playing at their top form, but this presents a perfect opportunity to spring board the rest of the season off of. The first leg at Stamford Bridge should be fascinating to watch. Chelsea has quite the edge on their home pitch, but United has proven they can get results anywhere if they play their best. I think this series is bound for extra time back at Old Trafford, honestly. I may be hoping more than anything that it goes to penalties, as well, as that would just be too good of a story.

CCL: Post RSL v Saprissa

What a night!This past Tuesday was a special evening at the RioT. Hosting its most important home match to date, RSL came out victorious in the first leg of its semi final vs Saprissa. The game was loaded with emotion and showed some tremendous skill from both teams. RSL got its win and, more importantly, kept a clean sheet. 2-0 lead going to Saprissa isn't by any means a confident margin, but it is a whole lot better than the alternative. Here is a brief look back at the game, player ratings for RSL, my man of the match award, and the wanker of the match award.

1st Half

RSL came flying out of the gate. Kreis said in post-game interviews that he told the guys to give Saprissa no room to breathe in those first 15-20 minutes, that is exactly what they did. Saprissa couldn't string together more than a couple passes and RSL was looking more and more dangerous by the second. In the 5th minute, about, it seemed as though all the hard work payed off when Nat Borchers, of all players, got on the end of a Fabian Espindola inch perfect cross. For whatever reason, the goal was called back. Upon review, the Saprissa player that Nat supposedly fouled attempted a bike, missed, and landed awkwardly. The ref thought Nat pushed, he obviously was not watching the game closely. It was such a bad call the AR on the west side initially signaled for a goal (he would have seen the foul) and then stopped and looked confused to say the least. This ended up not mattering all that much as Sabo put one in literally minutes later on a great counter from the middle of the pitch for RSL. Andy laid it out wide to Espy who crossed it back (intended for Andy, but ended up at Sabo) to Sabo who buried the shot. It wasn't pretty, but it went in. That's all that matters.

After the first 15 or so, Saprissa changed their formation and strategy a bit and seemed to get more time on the ball. RSL was a bit more comfortable after the Saborio goal and didn't want to get too stretched, you could tell. Saprissa had its moments, but nothing ever really materialized. The game got chippy at times with a couple Saprissa players going into the book and some more deserving to but, for whatever reason, the ref decided against it. Saprissa was the better side for a little bit, but didn't really have much to show for it. They had a near goal later in the half, but it was called back for a legitimate offsides. That meant going into half RSL was up 1-0.

2nd Half

The second 45 were interesting to say the least. RSL didn't come out, thankfully, flat like they did against Columbus. Instead, they came out at about the same pace they ended the half with. The game looked really like it was just put on pause for 15 minutes and then play resumed. Espy changed this, though, after about 15 minutes with some tremendous hustle and calm nerves. He went into an initial tackle with one of the Saprissa center backs and made the player rush his clearance and, I believe, got a piece of the ball to deflect it off its intended path. The Saprissa player went down grabbing his ankle, begging for a foul that wasn't there. The ball landed at Andy's feet and he, with his tremendous vision and passing abilities, put the ball right into the complaining center back's space. Espy ran onto the ball, side stepped the other center back with a wonderful cut back, and slotted the shot home with his right foot. Truly a hard working goal as Espy essentially got both an assist and a goal in it.

For moments after that it seemed as though RSL was just content with the 2 goal margin. The last thing they wanted was to give up a goal so they were really hesitant to push forward to hard. At the same time, Saprissa didn't want to leak anymore goals and thus made some rotations to play a full on counter attacking style. They resorted to long clearing balls, RSL wasn't its usual overly offensive passing self. Thus, the last 20 minutes can really be summed up as a bit awkward. Both teams didn't want to get scored on and thus weren't showing their true abilities offensively. It's the downside of a 2 leg series, but it is all part of the game. In the end, RSL probably could have added another but didn't want to expose themselves to that countering style Saprissa had settled into. The 2-0 result was a fair and just one.

RSL Player Ratings:

Nick Rimando: A-

- Nicky had a tremendous game between the pipes. He was only called on a couple times to make saves but did so extremely well. Great game from our midget

Tony Beltran: B+

- When I saw Tony was taking Wingert's spot I got a little nervous. Wingert is a key aspect of our back line and Tony is still a bit young. It didn't matter though as Tony answered the call. His offensive abilities need to be worked on, but he is a great defender.

Nat Borchers: B+

- Nat got robbed of a goal but still did his job very well in the back. The leader of this squad's defense did well to adjust to the changing styles of both teams and kept the back line organized.

Jamison Olave: B+

- Sadly Olave only got to put in 45 minutes, but they were solid. The big man made his presence felt and did his "Olave says no!" tackles. Love this guy, hope his injury isn't too serious.

Chris Schuler: B

- Chris isn't the prettiest player to watch. He seems a bit awkward and uncoordinated, but he gets the job done. Cant complain with results.

Robbie Russell: B-

- In my opinion Robbie had one of the worst nights out there, but still was ok. His tracking abilities weren't exposed too much and he didn't get burned too much. Needs improvement though, for sure, in the second leg.

Will Johnson: B+

- The kid works his tail off every night. Because of it, we don't realize how special it truly is at times. Will was everywhere in this game. Almost had another ridiculous shot find the back of the net, as well, in the second half.

Kyle Beckerman: B+

- Like Will, Kyle works his tail off the entire night every game. He had his hands full with some very talented players in the middle and handled himself pretty well. He is still on yellow card peril so he has to be careful with his play down in Costa Rica.

Javier Morales: A-

- Javi, especially in the first half, was the connecting guy. He was inspired out there, you could tell. Great night from the Argentine.

Andy Williams: A

- What can I say, this guy just keeps getting better with age. Another great night from the silky Andy Williams.

Alvaro Saborio: A-

- Sabo was, especially early on, a man possessed out there. He was getting to anything and everything and making sure his former team-mates remembered his name. Wonderful night from Sabo, tremendous shot on his goal.

Ned Grabavoy: B+

- Ned came on and did his thing. He is a great role player in this midfield who is really capable of being special on the occasion. He didn't have the moment of brilliance he has every once in awhile, but still was great on the night.

Arturo Alvarez: B

- Arturo got an incredible welcome from the fans, something I was even a bit surprised with (well done guys). He was a bit nervous, you could tell, but he also showed his abilities to change things up a bit if needed. Nothing too special, but his first night in the RioT finally came.

Man of the Match:
Fabian Espindola (A)

Espy proved why he is so special to this team in this game. His tremendous work-rate earned the second goal and he was constantly a threat for the rest of the game. Well done by the crazy haired Argentine.

Wanker of the Match:

Douglas Sequeira

Sequeria was lucky not to see red a couple times in this match. His late and often disgustingly dirty tackles had me thinking Kyle was a saint in the middle of the pitch. He is suspended for next match, so no more fearing that he might bust Javi's ankle.

Overall, just a wonderful night at the RioT. The fans were great, the play was, for the most part, very exciting and pretty, and the good guys won. You can't complain with that. Looking forward to the next leg, a lot of questions are in the air. For Saprissa, who fills in for their 3 suspended players and how offensive do they approach the game. For RSL, if Olave is out (even if not hurt, because of on the turf) who fills in for him and what kind of formation change, if any, does Kreis make. These will be looked at in the pre game post to that game on April 5th.

CCL: RSL vs Saprissa

Here we go, biggest match in Rio Tinto Stadium history.Tomorrow night, Tuesday March 15th at 8pm, Real Salt Lake will host Saprissa from Costa Rica in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League semi-final. Its a big deal. If RSL is to advance to the final against either Monterrey or, in what would be a juicy rematch, Cruz Azul they have to get through the purple dragon/monsters first. Here are my keys to the match, projected starting lineup for RSL (I did Saprissa's yesterday), key players to watch for both teams, and my projected final score for this first leg.

Keys to the Match for RSL:

- Defend as a group. Saprissa has multiple talented players on the ball, especially in the middle of the park. If RSL gets stretched or a bit lazy, Saprissa will make them pay. RSL has to stay sound defensively and, as Kreis preaches, defend as a unit just as much as they attack as a unit. Olave Beckerman, and Borchers have to have good games in this leg if RSL is going to succeed.

- Utilize set pieces. Saprissa, from what I have seen of them in this tournament and in general, is not a tremendous team in the air, especially defensively. RSL will have to be lethal on any and all set piece opportunities. Corners, free kicks, etc. RSL has to show not only creativity but its strength and size. I honestly think a goal or two in this first leg will come off a set piece for RSL.

- Keep a clean sheet. This emphasizes the first bullet a bit more. The away-goals rule applies i this series, so keeping a clean sheet on your home field is just as important, in my opinion, as getting a multiple goal lead. I would take a 2-0 win over a 3-1 win.

Keys to the match for Saprissa:

- Expose the wings (or lack thereof) on RSL. This is an area that will, along with the set pieces, be what decides the series. If Saprissa is allowed to get wide and go down the flanks, they will give RSL nightmares. Both of the outside backs for Saprissa are very talented players that love to get forward.

- Get a goal. Like the clean sheet for RSL, a goal on the road would be huge for Saprissa. Even if they lose, like I said, a goal on the road is incredibly valuable.

- Disrupt the midfield of RSL. Teams are most successful against RSL when they clog up the middle of the pitch and force RSL to try and play longer balls through the air. RSL isn't built to play the kick and run style, they are built to control the game on the floor. Saprissa can open things up a bit and clog the middle. If they want to be successful, they will have to do this.

Projected Starting XI for RSL:

- GK: Nick Rimando - has to have a solid night

- LB: Chris Wingert - minor ankle sprain wont hold Chris back

- CB: Jamison Olave - must be sound in defense and not let the Saprissa players get to him with their diving

- CB: Nat Borchers - he has to be the Nat we know and love, nuff said

- RB: Robbie Russell - needs to get forward and get service into Sabo

- LM: Will Johnson - will have his work cut out tracking the outside back for Saprissa (Blanco)

- CDM: Kyle Beckerman - the midfield cohesion starts with Kyle, this is a huge aspect

- CAM: Javier Morales - needs to have a career night

- RM: Andy Williams - needs to show that vision and work ethic he did against CBus

- FW: Fabian Espindola - must keep his cool and go at players 1v1

- FW: Alvaro Saborio - only player with experience in this grand of club stage, must lead team

Key Player for Saprissa: Walter Centeno

All my research points to this guy being the heart and soul of Saprissa. He essentially plays the Morale's type role of creator for the squad. He is a member of the Costa Rica national team and, though getting older, still has some incredible vision and passing abilities. Kyle will have his hands full with this guy for sure. If we can keep Centeno in check, we should be able to eliminate their offensive abilities.

Key Player for RSL: Alvaro Saborio

Sabo is the only player on the squad to go this deep in a champions league format. Robbie Russell played in the European version, sure, but he wasn't ever in the knockout phases, or at least not a semi-final. Sabo also, as we all know, is from Costa Rica and played for quite awhile with Saprissa. He needs to be the go to guy and a leader out there. His typically cool composure must show and he must be willing to put in loads of dirty work. For some reason, I think Sabo is going to have a monster night against his former squad.




Game Projection: RSL 2 - Saprissa 0
- Sabo with a brace: 33' and 65'

It may be more hopeful thinking than anything, but I think RSL will be able to get 2 goals and keep a clean sheet against Saprissa. I'm not 100% sure or comfortable with the idea that 2 goals will be enough to get us through to the next round, but I think it will be a good cushion nonetheless.


Regardless of the outcome, this is going to be a memorable night. You don't host a semi-final in your regions champions league (the grandest club tournament their is) all that often. Hopefully the fans that brave the weather (which looks to be actually pretty nice) will be loud and vocal. I would love to be singing "OLE, OLE OLE OLE, REAL SALT LAKE" the whole night through with 15K other crazy RSL fans.

Red and Blue Army vs Purple Dragons

The semi's have been set, and man are they juicy. RSL has drawn the Costa Rican powerhouse Saprissa; aka the Purple Dragons/Beasts/Monsters/etc.

This match up is interesting, if for nothing else, because of the home field advantage which each team enjoys. RSL, as we all know, plays at the RioT (Rio Tinto Stadium) and enjoys the altitude, cold thin air (at this time of year), dry air, and fans that are growing daily. Saprissa, on the other hand, plays in Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá, an intimidating stadium regardless of the day or team they are facing. The number one thing that jumps out is the fans. Saprissa doesn't have a geographical advantage like RSL, but it does have fans that make you feel as though "you are in the cave of a monster". All the fans are right on top of you, with the supporters group called "La Ultra Morada" (The Purple Ultra) being the loudest.

These fans rival the Mexican fans in terms of craziness. They have been known to throw coins, rocks, bags of urine (no that's not a sick joke, I'm serious), etc at the opposing players, specifically keepers, while playing there.

What I am trying to say is that RSL will have its hands full for this one. To be comfortable going down there, I think RSL needs to get a 2-0 result here at the RioT. The clean sheet is vital, but the goal margin is even more so. Playing there is not an easy thing to do, but this club played well in Mexico City so who knows how much it will actually affect them. I have confidence in this squad, just hope they do themselves some favors and get a big lead while at home.

Regardless of how this series turns, this is a huge milestone for the club. To be in the semi finals of this regions grandest tournament is a testament to Jason Kreis, Dave Checketts, Garth Lagerway, Bill Manning, the players, the rest of the RSLFO staff, etc. All of these people have logged in hundreds if not thousands of hours for this club to get it where it is now. We are (I don't want to get ahead of myself but to prove how amazing this is) literally 4 matches, including these 2, away from going to Japan in the Club World Championships. Yeah, this is huge.

Get your tickets, invite everyone you know and then some, make some confetti, be loud, buy streamers, etc. This is, without a doubt, the most prestigious and important game this club has played at the RioT to date.

I will have a pre-game analysis of the first round at the RioT coming this weekend or Monday. Can't wait to write it, seriously. I want to go watch some history, how about you?

CCL: RSL v Columbus Crew, Leg 2

Here we go.
March 1st at the RioT, sounds so warm, doesn't it.

This game will be one of the most important matches ever played at the RioT, heck, its one of the most important matches of this clubs entire history (yeah, its that short). Coming home after an uneventful but at the same time eventful match in Columbus Ohio, the score is locked at 0-0. 3 players will be serving suspensions in this match after being sent off in the Ohio leg.

One of those three was a Crew member, the other two were RSL players. Tony Beltran, who seemingly just won the starting right back position from Robbie Russel, had his night end far too early on a second yellow that was, in all honesty, a bad tackle but not worthy of a yellow let alone a second yellow to send him off.

The other 2 sending offs went hand in hand as Renteria, for Columbus, decided he would send a message to Nat Borchers with his elbow. For whatever reason, the assistant referee didn't stop play right that second and have Renteria sent off. So, in a rather stupid move, Nat took matters into his own hands. While he will claim he simply put his knee out and sorta tripped Renteria, it was a stupid stupid way of getting even. The AR, after having Nat draw his attention, was checking up on the two and didn't hesitate to stop play this time (oh the irony). He has Nat sent off as Renteria went down like a ton of bricks with the knee. This was somewhat deserved, but really it proved that retaliation gets punished far more often than the initial act. However, the real weirdness came when suddenly the AR remembered what Renteria did and had him sent off as well. Really a bizarre, and to be honest, horrible way of dealing with the situation. Justice was served, I guess you could say, but it all could have been avoided if the AR would have stopped play the first time. Regardless, Nat knows he shouldn't do that.

These two ejections, along with the Tony Beltran one, make this match incredibly interesting. Nat is one of the leaders of this squad, especially for the defense. Kyle may wear the armband, but Nat truly leads that back line. Without him, it will be interesting to see who takes charge. Filling in for Nat will be, and this is mostly a guess as its so early in the season, Rauwshan McKenzie. The youngster had some good and some bad matches last year. This is his chance to get off on the right foot with the fans and more importantly the coaching staff. His performance at Mexico City has many cautious, but a good showing here will help people forget that crazy 5-4 monsoon night.

Filling in for Tony Beltran will be the guy that Tony stole the starting position from, Uncle Phil...

I mean Robbie Russell. The veteran back is the only player on the squad with European Champions League experience, so honestly its not a downgrade at all. In fact, in a match that requires RSL attack much more, he is likely the better option. His crossing abilities are better than Beltran's, though his marking isn't as good. This move may have happened regardless of the ejection to Beltran, so really RSL wont be hurting.

For Columbus, well their ejection might have been a blessing in disguise. Because of the actions of Renteria, Jeff Cunnigham, aka member/leader of the RSL Killer's group, will take the starting position for the Crew up top. Jeff has, as we all know, a rather interesting history with RSL. He was sent packing by Jason Kreis when he first became coach, even despite winning the golden boot the season before. Jeff always seems to get up for games against RSL, especially in the fortress known as the RioT. Jeff will be the guy testing the youngster McKenzie, along with Jamison Olave. In all likelihood, Olave will draw the main responsibility of marking Cunningham. Depending upon the officiating, this could be a good or a bad thing. I have yet to see who will be the center ref for this match, so I cant give my true opinion on this quite yet.

What makes this game really interesting is the application of the away goals rule. Within the 90 minutes of regular time (I will get to why this is key later on) the away goals rule applies, meaning that if there is a draw that is anything but 0-0, the Columbus Crew would advance. Thus, I think the Crew will come out attacking much more than many expect. Even if they open themselves up a little bit, a goal in their favor is gigantic. This likely attacking focus, along with a pitch that has been covered and heated (isn't technology awesome) and will thus be in much better shape than the ice rink at Crew Stadium, will make this game exciting.

Jeff will be the guy for the Crew, if it's going to be anybody, to find the back of the net. He would love nothing more than to be the person responsible for sending RSL home too soon in the tournament.

For RSL, the key player of the match is, for me, Robbie Russell

He will likely be our main weapon on crosses. Saborio is tremendous in the air and with Chad Marshall likely out for the Crew, RSL will look to challenge them with crosses. He will also have to take a bit of a leadership type role with Borchers out. He and Wingert will share this responsibility, but I think Russell will be a key to the RSL success.

RSL opens the scoring, Columbus draws level before half. RSL comes flying out of the gates in the second half and gets one off a set piece. Columbus pushes late to try and equalize, leaving their defense exposed, and Paulo Junior (as a sub for Espy) comes on and finishes the deal.

FORZA REAL

Post RSL v CBus CCL

Well that was ugly...
...in so many ways. The first and most obvious one was the play itself. RSL could not string together more than a couple passes it seemed. The field was also in quite a horrendous shape, which didn't help the play much either. Lastly, and what ruined the return leg (or made it that much more interesting) was the officiating.


Three red cards would make one believe this was an extremely dirty match with players out of control. From what I saw, this was not the case at all. It was obvious it was the first truly competitive game of the season for both teams (and the ref) given the timing of tackles and such. The ref should take this into account. Beltran's first tackle was worthy of a yellow, no doubt. He was late and came through the player (Ekpo, I believe) pretty hard. However, the second one was, at most, a regular foul. He came in from the side, missed the ball or possibly even got a part of it, and simply tripped Garey. The ref, for whatever reason, decides to not do the typical talking to the player knowing he is on a yellow. No, instead he instantly goes to his book and sends Tony off. Marrufo, you blow. I cant really comment on the Borchers/Renteria sending off as I did not see what happened. However, to send both players off something substantial must have happened (and then someone reacted). I didn't take Borchers as the fiery type. Much of the talk has been that Olave is the one with the issues and Borchers the rock. It really wasn't a great time for Nat to challenge people's opinion on him.


As for the actual game itself, I'll put it simply: Columbus was the better side. RSL had moments of their beautiful play, however they couldn't really ever build anything and get a dangerous shot off. When RSL plays well they force the other team to clear their lines in awkward ways and/or give up corners. RSL had 0 corners in the match. That, alone, tells you the kind of day it was for the boys in red. I think the pitch obviously played a factor, as did the cold itself along with it being the first true match; however this team looked like it was playing its first day of preseason soccer. The chemistry was somewhat there, as it should be given the amount of time these guys have been together, but it was so disjointed at times it really didn't ever materialize the way we are so familiar with.


As for the Crew, so much for "re-building". They looked to have things at least somewhat figured out and, in all honesty, have a team ready to compete in MLS play. I think depth will surely be an issue for them, but hell we didnt expect much out of their starters so who knows what to expect from that bench. I tip my hat to their staff, they did well to prepare for this match and really were the better side, overall, on the night. Their red, really, might become a blessing in disguise. Jeff Cunningham, one of the "RSL Killers", will now be starting. Add in that Borchers wont be back there (or Tony) and you have to say Columbus really gained an advantage in that red. Renteria, well done. Man of the match possibly?


The return leg is wide open. RSL has some tough decisions to make in the back line given that 2 starters will be serving suspensions. I wonder if Kreis is comfortable with putting McKenzie or Schuler back with Olave or if he will slide Russell in and use someone else at right back. Either way, RSL has to focus on the offensive end of the ball. If, and that's a huge if, we get a goal, we cant simply sit back and defend. Say Columbus ties it up at 1-1, they would be advancing. Away goals count as a little more in this competition, so RSL has to come out thinking it will score 2 goals. If I was Kreis, I would tell the guys they are down a goal. Yes, they need to focus on defending well, but you have to score, period.

This next part is a new addition I want to add for my blog. A lot of people like to add "man of the match" and I'm all for that. However, I will also be adding "wanker of the match" as that is so much more interesting. So, for last nights CCL first leg:

Man of the Match: Sebastian Miranda
- The new outside back for the Crew had a terrific night and was a large part of the reason why RSL simply couldn't build anything offensively. Great addition for the Crew, this kid is good.

Wanker of the Match: Jair Marrufo
- This guy seems to always want to put his stamp on the match. As a center ref, that's a terrible habit to have. However, he didn't let us down as he sent 3 players off and made the second leg at the RioT all that more interesting.

CCL: RSL @ Columbus

And so it begins...

2011 starts off with a bang as RSL goes to Columbus to play in, arguably, one of the biggest matches of its history. The weather will be freezing, the attendance will likely be small, but the passion will be 100% there. Columbus has been branded as a "rebuilding" team, at the moment, and would love nothing more than to prove they are legit by knocking off one of the favorites for the MLS season in CCL play. They have nothing to lose, which is scary for RSL. The boys in red have all the expectations weighing down on them. Anything but a result (or even a win) is going to get some bad publicity from many looking for any possible reason to kick the Utah team down.

I have stated before and I will again, this match will be very tight. Both teams play, traditionally, good soccer. They don't kick and hope and they aren't overly dirty in the tackle department. They make the game as beautiful as possible. Those thinking Columbus lost everything by losing GBS will be surprised to see young #17 Ekpo in the middle of the pitch. He, along with Rodgers, will give this Columbus team life. They are the players to watch for Columbus and will make or break this series for them. Injuries have come at the worst possible time for the Crew as 2 starters came down last week with injuries. Their 1st and 2nd string keepers are also supposed to be sitting, at least this first leg, on the bench. Their lineup will likely be missing some components, but it will still be solid. They have Marshall and Iro in the back, which is enough to keep them in any game.

Player to Watch/X Factor for Columbus: Emmanuel Ekpo. The GBS replacement?

On the RSL side of the ball, things have only gotten better and better. Espy, Javi, and Alvarez all are training 100% after picking up nagging injuries. The only injuries listed for the squad are to Campos and Arnoux, two forwards that wouldn't even see the selected 18, let alone the pitch. RSL will likely come out in its 4-4-2 diamond midfield. Many of the spots are secured, but a few are up in the air. Here is what I expect to see, with *'s next to those that may possibly get rotated out.

- Paulo Junior has been impressive all preseason and took advantage of Espindola's injury he picked up. Espy was having a great preseason, as well, up to that injury so him earning the starting spot back wouldn't be too big of a surprise

- The right side of the pitch is a bit of a question mark for RSL. In the midfield, it seems as though Grabavoy has the starting spot secured. However, Collen Warner has been really making an argument for himself and Andy Williams is Andy Williams. I think Grabs will get the starting spot, but it will be interesting to see who between Andy and Warner is the first sub used.

- At right back we have the battle between Russell and Beltran still going on. I think Beltran is the better option, but Russell isn't too shabby either. The spot was Russell's last season, so Beltran will have to do something special to win it from him. I think Russell's issue of tracking midfielders and forwards will be what gives Beltran the start, in the end.

Player to Watch/X Factor for RSL: Javier Morales. The man who runs the show

Overall this is a great match up. Both teams lucked out in that they didn't draw an opponent who was in the middle of their season all set to go. Both teams have zero 2011 "competitive matches" under their belts. This game will show some rust, I promise you that. However, it will be great for both teams, regardless of the result, come MLS play in a couple weeks. These 2 matches will prime the teams for their openers and give them an edge.

As for my prediction on this first leg, I'm gonna stick with what I posted last time: 1-1. RSL has yet to keep a clean sheet in CCL play, but has yet to be shutout themselves. A 1-1 draw will be a great result for the boys as then they come home to the RioT with all the power in their hands. The lone RSL goal will come from none other than Alvaro Saborio. A 0-0 draw at home would put them through, even, considering the away goals rule is in effect. Therefore, a goal in this first leg is of huge importance for RSL. I think they will get it, and wouldn't be surprised to see them hang one or two more on the 3rd string keeper that Columbus is using.

Champions League - UEFA and CONCACAF

Its that time of year, the champions league is getting to the big games and the silverware is only a few games away for each team. On the UEFA side, of course I will be pulling for Milan. On the CONCACAF side, its all RSL, of course. With that said, here is how I see things going in the round of 16 in UEFA and the quarters for CONCACAF:

UEFA:
AC Milan v Tottenham Hotspurs
One of the best matchups in the round right here. I obviously have a biased opinion towards Milan, but honestly think they have the edge in this one. Spurs have lost a lot of their early season momentum. Milan, on the other hand, seems to be clicking very well at the moment (see the 4-0 thrashing they gave to Parma over the weekend). With players like Ibra, Robinho, Pato, Cassano, etc. the offensive side of things should be great for Milan. Spurs, especially without Bale for the first leg, just wont be able to defend that well for that long.

Valencia v Schalke
Though this match up doesn't feature two big clubs, it does feature a great match up. Schalke is a top team, but Valencia is incredibly difficult to play against, especially in Spain. The first leg will really be vital for t his one. I think the Spanish team will pull it out with a big opening win and then hang on for dear life in the second leg.

Roma v Shaktar Donetsk
Shakhtar were the surprise group winners, can they continue this form against the side from Rome? I believe they can. Roma is in a bit of a slump this year overall. They have a few bright spots here and there, but are not the same Roma team that can play with anyone. I think Shaktar comes into Rome and gets a draw then takes it home to win it.

The draw being billed the best of the round. I think Barca is the best team in the world when they are on, no doubt. Kobenhavn v Chelsea
It always amazes me that Chelsea seems to get a rather weak draw in the first knockout round. This year, again, is no exception. Chelsea should murder Kobenhavn (I like this spelling better). A lot of people are sleeping on this gigantic match up. With the focus on Arsenal/Barca, its understandable. However, this rematch of the final should be a great one. I loathe both teams, and wish they both could lose, but to say they don't both play some good football would be a complete lie. Inter seems to be turning things around since they got their new coach. Bayern is struggling in league play, so what a better place than the champions league than to make up for it. I see this one going to penalties in Munich, honestly.

With Columbus seemingly "rebuilding" many people are just handing this one to RSL. However, I am not buying into this cake walk. I honestly think RSL has their hands full, and if preseason is any indicator (which really its not, but it needs to be pointed out) their defense is struggling. On the other end, Columbus has had some rather decent preseason games and all this talk about "rebuilding" is a bunch of crap. I see this one being a whole lot closer than anyone expects

Cruz Azul v Santos Laguna
This matchup is worthy of a final. Both teams are tremendous and both play the game til the final whistle (RSL knows to well). I think Cruz Azul, even despite finishing 2nd in their group, is the team to beat on this side of the bracket. They have far too much talent, especially up top, to be taken lightly. The first leg in Mexico City is going to be really telling of this series.

(FORZA MILAN & FORZA RSL

The English Premier League - Preview/Opening

One week down, and arguable the best league in the world is more than living up to its title and the new claim that it is more open than ever. The "big 4" still look strong, but some of the outsiders are looking to close the gap and break into that glorious champions league spot. Lets take a look, team by team, at the EPL and what it has to offer this season.

Arsenal:
My personal thoughts, before the season had started, were that this team was going to be the most vulnerable of the big 4. The last couple of seasons have not been spectacular for the gunners, and last season looked like a new low. Most of the season they were battling for that 4th spot. And while they did eventually secure it, and by a good margin, the going was not easy. This season, however, they look like a different team. No Adebayor and you would think the team couldn't score, but it seems just the opposite from their first 2 meaningful matches. They put on a clinic @ Everton and then went into Celtic and got a 2-0 win. Watch out for the gunners, if this kind of play continues, they could be the strange dark horse of sorts.

Aston Villa:
I have always been a fan of the villans. I find their football, their players, their fans, just everything to be spot on for what a good club should have. So, a little foolishly now that I think of it, I thought they could be one of the potential teams to break up the party of 4. However, looking at their losses, most notably Gareth Barry, and their lack of new additions, its hard to see them pushing the likes of Liverpool, arsenal, Chelsea, and united. I expect this team to still finish near a UEFA spot, but wouldn't be surprised to see them miss it. A very talented squad, just still trying to get over that hump this season.

Birmingham City:
After a season away from the top flight, Birmingham finds itself back in the mix. Birmingham has made a few adjustments to try and stay in the top flight this time around, but this league is not for anybody weak or with holes in their roster. Sadly, I think Birmingham's stay will only last this year and they will find themselves being relegated again. Still need to find more talent, but better than the last time around.

Blackburn Rovers:
Having Big Sam on your side is usually a good thing... well don't ask a Newcastle fan about it at least. This team always finds a way to amaze me. They don't have the best players, the best facilities, or anything close to the top (compared to the rest of the league) yet they find a way to scrap out wins and stay in the top flight. I think this trend will continue, but they may flirt with relegation more than they would like. A finish around the middle of the table, more likely the bottom middle, is where I expect Blackburn to be at seasons end.

Bolton Wanderers:
Making sure to have the ugliest kits in all of the EPL (can I get a price check on a Bolton wanderer please on isle 5?) Bolton will not be a push over. While nobody thinks they will push for the Champions League spots, don't be surprised to see them pushing for that UEFA spot. Bolton has many talented players and is always very well managed. This team will surprise people this season.

Burnley:
The league needed another team that wore red with light blue sleeves didn't it? I was watching highlights from this past weekend and was asking myself, why did Villa play twice? Oh wait, maybe West Ham had two games? nope, newly promoted Burnley has decided to stick with a kit that looks pretty much identical to that of those other two teams (should be entertaining to watch those teams play each other don't ya think, especially the fans). I thought this team would be a one and gone kind of team, but after knocking off the champs, Manchester United, they are not to be passed. I still think they will battle relegation all season, but they wont be a Derby County kind of team (no offense). Relegated, but not going down without a fight.

Chelsea:
As hard as it is to admit, this is the team to beat in my opinion. Chelskea has former Milan coach Ancelotti at the reigns and with a very talented squad, they will be a major test for anyone. The only problem I see the fake blues facing is that they have some very streaky players in some very important roles. Terry is always good, Lampard is mostly as well, but players like Drogba, Anelka, Ballack, Deco, etc can all be really good or pretty awful. The trick for Ancelotti will be to find a way to get them all to play well enough to not drop dumb points in the later part of the season like they usually do. Not an easy task, but not impossible with the amount of talent.

Everton:
The true blues (yes I hate Chelsea scum) looked like a team to be reckoned with in pre-season. They knocked off the brilliant MLS all-stars (its a joke, get off the floor) and played well in their friendlies. However, no team wants to open the season with a loss at home, especially one so painfully awful. A 6-1 defeat will be hard to shake, but honestly it came at the best time it could if it had to happen. You learn and move on. Everton has to figure out how to get the ball in the back of the net and how to defend set pieces. They will push the top 4, but it is going to take a MUCH better effort to be an honest threat. UEFA spot maybe in the end, still just not enough consistent talent.

Fulham:
After finishing in a UEFA spot for the first time last season, Everton will be looking to keep and/or improve their status in the league as a top team. While I do not honestly expect them to push the top 4 too much, they have the dark horse role for that kind of thing. Fulham is a very talented squad, then when clicking, can knock off the top teams in the league (see last season against United). I see a similar finish as last season for Fulham, which they will likely be more than happy to keep.

Hull City:
The team that won the hearts of many last season is still, after some sort of miracle, in the top flight. I have never seen a team sink as bad as they did last season, but I am very happy they didn't sink into relegation. With the addition of Jozy Altidore, this team will quickly be one many Americans check on regularly. The Tigers have some very talented players, the most obvious being Geovanni. The man is a machine in the middle that produces some of the most gorgeous goals in the league. I am hopeful that this team can stay in the top flight again, and in the end it should be a very feasible task. However, any dreams of pushing into the top part of the group should be pushed to the side now. They will finish in the middle of the table, but that will be very good for them overall.

Liverpool:
Losing Xabi Alonso looked like it was going to kill Liverpool in their first match against Tottenham. However, it looked like it may have been a short missing period as they destroyed Stoke at home. While Stoke is not top talent, to beat a team like that isn't easy no matter who it is in this league. Liverpool is going to be a good team this year. The addition of Johnson at the outside back position will help greatly. But not having a top holding mid is going to be what kills them in the end. I expect them to stay in the top 4, but it wont be an easy task at all.

Manchester City:
On paper this team has the best chance of breaking into the top 4. But, the game is not played on paper thankfully. While City may have some very good talent, they still lack a strong and sturdy back line. This is one thing that you MUST have if you want to even contend for a top spot, even a UEFA spot, in this league. City may have some fantastic fire power (very streaky though) but they dont have the defense to hold it up. City will finish 5th if they can figure something out on the back line, and that's the very best I see things going for them. If I had to put money on it, I think they will finish just outside the top 4, maybe 6th-8th place.

Manchester United:
The biggest question for the red devils is who will fill in for Ronaldo? This, in my opinion, is not going to be just one player. The easy answer would be Rooney, but he cant do it all on his own, hate to break it to you. Rooney should have a stellar year, the team is now built to go through him, not use him to go through Ronaldo. Unless United figures out a solution, its going to be hard to say that they will defend their title. Players like Nani, Anderson, Berbatov, and Owen have to show their worth this year if this team wants to finish above Chelsea. In the end, I see a tight title race decided on the last day between the red devils and Chelsea... my heart says to go with United, so I will.

Portsmouth:
Poppy is going to have a rough go at it this year I think. They don't have top talent outside of their aging keeper David James. I see them flirting with relegation, and being one of the teams fighting on the last day to stay above water. Will they? Its hard to say. I think they will be the surprise (sorta) relegation team this season.

Stoke City:
Stoke found a way to stay in the top flight last season, but this season is going to be just as hard, if not harder, to keep that place. These guys seem obvious candidates for 2nd season slump/relegation. And honestly, its hard to argue against that. This team does not have the talent to hang with the big, medium, and even other small guns in the league. Stoke could easily be the first team to be relegated this season.

Sunderland:
Somebody has to fill the spots between relegation and the middle of the table, and Sunderland seems to be a shoe-in for that spot. Not great talent, but better than a handful of teams. Sunderland will produce some interesting results, but in the end, they will be in the 15ish range. Nothing great, but hey, you are in the top flight still.

Tottenham Hotspurs:
The hotspurs have constructed a team that has a lot of teams in the EPL worried. If this talent clicks, they could be nearly unstoppable. However, getting the talent to click is much easier said then done. While it pains me to say it, this team has shown it has the talent and depth to push for a Champions League spot. I don't see the big 4 busting up this year, but these guys will be nipping at the heels just waiting to get in. A very respectable 5th place is the likely spot for the boys from White Heart Lane.

West Ham United:
Its confusing to watch a team play such pretty soccer do so bad with the end result (sounds like RSL at times eh). West Ham has talent better than half of the teams, roughly, in this league. However, they have talent that isn't as good as the other half. What does that mean? You guessed it, middle of the table.

Wigan Athletic:
Wigan is one of those teams that can look brilliant one day, against a very good side, but the next day look like they are fighting relegation. Consistency is vital in this league, and unless Wigan can find a way to get some, they will be sitting in the bottom/middle of the table. I don't see them getting relegated, but I also don't see them having the consistent play that they need to push for a UEFA spot.

Wolverhampton:
How can you not like a team that calls themselves the wolves? I have found myself already liking this team though I have never really even seen them play a full 90. They remind me of Hull, but they wont make the same splash. Come season end though, sadly there must be 3 teams that say bye to the top flight. I don't know how the Wolves will stay above that sink zone, and in the end, I think they might just squeeze it out.

I think it will be an open season, but in the end, the top 4 just are so much deeper than pretty much everyone else that they can make it to May still playing good football.
