Goat Killin' Time
The last time this team came to the RioT was not pretty. It was awful. It was possibly worse than losing the CCL Final to Monterrey. It was easily the most hollow win I've ever watched RSL partake in. This year is about revenge. This year it's about taking the Goats out behind the woodshed, telling Robin Fraser to cover his eyes, and smashing this pathetic billboard of a team from "LA" to tiny pieces.
When you look at this match on paper, there isn't much to get excited about. You have possibly the worst team in the league, Chivas USA, taking on what most would consider the best in the league currently, Real Salt Lake. It's at the RioT, where RSL typically dominates. RSL is returning key players. Their on fire. Chivas hasn't scored yet. etc etc. This match is one that, if you were playing in it, you would feel the result was predetermined. The one aspect of this game, though, that blows up a whole lot of those other factors is the manager for Chivas USA. If there was a guy who could devise the best game plan against RSL possible, it'd probably be Robin Fraser. He knows this club, it's tendencies, it's players, and most importantly it's staff. Robin is the wild card, he is what will make this match much more intriguing than it probably should be.

- RSL is going to dominate for long stretches in this game. Chivas will likely pack it in a bit in search of trying to get a 0-0 draw. They don't have much offense, and it looks like they might be without Juan Pablo Angel, so going forward is going to be really tough. Kyle has to be the guy in the middle that dictates the flow of the game. When teams sit in you have to be patient with the ball, but you can't be slow with it. In order to get guys sucked out of position, there needs to be quick 1 or 2 touch passes dissecting their shell. Kyle will be the guy that initiates and, most likely, be called upon to make that lethal pass to the attack far more often than he typically would. I expect Kyle to have a stellar game in this one.
Prediction: RSL 3 - Chivas 0
- The key to RSL getting a win will be a first half goal, preferably in the first 30 minutes. Home Sweet Home
Victory. Two goals. Clean Sheet. Couldn't ask for much more out of a home opener for the 2012 season.
RSL didn't show their seemingly mid-season form like they did in LA during this game, but they did show that they are still a dominant side. Against a team that has loads of talent (just can't seem to put it together) RSL not only was able to get the W, but also do so with their typically "sexy" fashion of football. Loved the game, loved the atmosphere, just a great night. Well done RSL and RSL Nation.
Man of the Match: Paulo Junior
I'm guessing Paulo took my criticism to heart from last week. He looked much much better on, and more importantly, off the ball in this game. His skill on the ball proved to the be difference as he got an assist on the game winner and should get loads of credit for setting up the second. He still lacked that really explosive burst of speed that could have opened up the New York back line, but he made up for it with well-timed runs and passes. It was really hard to pick a guy for MOTM. You could pick probably 7 or 8 guys in an RSL kit (and maybe even Henry) and make a valid argument for them.
Player and Team Ratings:
Rimando: B+
- When called upon he made the saves. I think there were possibly a few chances for quick distribution from him that he missed. Other than that, I can't think of any criticisms.
Wingert: A-
- Solid night from Wingert who I originally had at MOTM. New York wanted to put Richards in behind Wingert all night and he simply wouldn't let it happen.
Schuler: B+
- A very solid night from him as well. He had his hands full between Henry, Cooper, and Ballouchy. He was probably the best player for RSL in the defensive middle.
Olave: B
- This dude is incredible. My only complaint is that it seemed New York was looking to attack him largely in the second half and nearly succeeded on a few occasions. His shrug on Cooper in the second half was a thing of beauty.
Beltran: B
- He started the game rather sketchy. His touch was letting him down and he seemed almost a little too jacked up on the emotions of the game. After awhile he settled, though, and proved to be the solid defender we know he is
Beckerman: B-
- He struggled in this match once New York overloaded the midfield. He'll get the blame for their attacks as they were most dangerous in his "area" but he also wasn't getting the proper coverage from his other midfielders.
Velasquez: B
- Good night from the kid, again. If there were any complaints it would be that he still struggles to cover for Beckerman (takes time to learn) and that he passed the ball more often to the easy pass rather than correct pass.
Grabavoy: B+
- Another serious MOTM candidate, Grabs was the solid underrated player again. He prevented more New York counters from happening than any other RSL player on the pitch. He does stuff not many notice, but it is truly some of the most valuable stuff for the team.
Gil: B
- Luis would disappear in this game for stretches, but when he was there he was lethal with his passes. Playing that AM spot is hard on the guy as it requires run after run after run across the pitch to be the release valve for both the defense and offense. He is still developing game by game and looks better each passing play.
Espindola: B+
- Espy is an interesting character in that he wants perfection from his teammates but also wants to try things out himself. It is frustrating at times to watch, but then he'll make a perfect run and win the game and you just have to tip your hat to the guy. Solid player. He is going to have a hell of a season.
Paulo Junior: A
- Listed as MOTM, enough said. Solid night.
Javi: B-
- When I saw he and Sabo being subbed on I thought we were in store for a grand finish to the match. It turned out I was wrong, New York completely controlled the game once Javi and Sabo came on. The spark the two were supposed to add just never came and it wasn't because the other guys dropped their game. Javi and Sabo both struggled once out there/
Sabo: C+
- Shanking his shot in the second half instead of laying off to a wide open Espy gets him the lowest player rating. I can't really be too harsh on him for shooting, it was open at the far post, but the pass was so much more the right choice it was frustrating to watch.
Team Rating: B
- We looked good at times, but really struggled to close the game out. On the road, that will get us punished. At home, that will make a lot of us fans really uncomfortable. Pretty solid start, great end to the first half and opening of the second. But the finish? Really lacked that typical RSL closing.
Wanker of the Match: Roy Miller
I forgot to add this last week. It makes me sad as last weeks was a thousand times easier to pick (that bitching David Beckham). Miller had a pretty off game for New York in this one. The Tico just found himself out of position more often than not and really should have been punished more than RSL did.

St Patty's Home Opener
After an extremely satisfying season opener at LA, RSL returns home to open the home schedule against the unpredictable New York Red Bulls.
Once again, RSL is carrying a ton of injuries entering this game. While they showed last game that they have some pretty solid depth to replace those missing pieces, it's still a bit of a worry for the team in this match. New York, on the other hand, is coming off of a road loss at Dallas over the weekend. They really struggled to get anything going offensively and were outplayed in pretty much every position on the field. They'll be looking to bounce back and, like they did when the RioT opened, ruin the special night for RSL.
With Beltran likely out for knee issues, Morales resting his sore legs, Saborio still recovering, and Johnson still on the road to full health after sports hernia surgery - RSL is going to have an interesting lineup for this one. Expect a lot of the same faces as we did in LA with a new, brightly highlighted one, added in.

- The Japanese addition will have to prove his worth in this game. I'm not sure if Kreis will put him on the right or the left side of the defense. If he is on the right, that would likely mean Velasquez is in front of him. Two rookies on the same side of the field? Not something I'd be comfortable with. If he is on the left side, though, he'd probably be going 1v1 with Dane Richards a lot. Also something I'm not too comfortable with. No matter what, it's going to be a match up that decides the game. Tanaka will be defending Lindpere or Richards, two guys that have proven to be lethal against RSL.
RSL should be able to win the midfield, will have a huge advantage with Espindola in the offensive third, but will have a huge question mark at outside back. Schuler and Olave will need to be on the top of their games, too, as the starting forwards for New York will likely be Henry and Cooper (another guy who has had success against RSL). This could very easily turn into a shootout of sorts as the offensive pieces for each team have shown to be successful against the opposing defensive pieces.

Revenge
While it wasn't a playoff game, or anywhere really close to that kind of importance, it was still satisfying to serve LA a cold glass of revenge on their home field. Ending their home undefeated streak was just a cheery on top.
- I was really nervous when I saw this kid in the starting lineup. Just months ago this kid was playing in a junior college. Now he is playing on the same field as David Beckham, Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan, Kyle Beckerman, etc. You could tell early on that he was nervous. Can you blame him? But after some touches on the ball, a few completed passes, and a few tackles he got into the flow. Even more so, he started to show his flair on the ball. Javi and Sabo coming on made the difference, but Velasquez was what sparked the ultimate RSL comeback. If this was any sort of indication on what he'll bring to the team, we all should be very excited and enjoy it while he stays (Europe will come calling).
- The 5 minutes following the first goal in a game are incredibly important, ask any coach. The team that registered the first goal can become relaxed or they can be injected with a burst of energy. Similarly, the team that was scored on can dip into a letdown or they can "turn the switch" and mount a comeback. In this game, we saw both LA relax a little and RSL push. Velasqeuz was the main man as he whipped in a dangerous ball. Sean Franklin of LA dealt with it in the worst possible way, placing it neatly into the back of his own net. Had LA been able to weather the storm for 5 more minutes rather than concede a goal, the result would have likely been much different.
Player and Team Evaluations:

- A few shaky moments, but also some truly brilliant moments. That orange kit of his is hideous.

- He had his hands full dealing with Beckham in occasional 1v1 situations. His switch on defending lead to the goal. Though that was likely more Grabavoy's fault than his.
Olave: B
- A pretty solid night overall. However, his marking on the LA goal was absolutely pathetic.
Schuler: B-
- Similar to Olave, his marking on the LA goal was bad. His touch seemed a bit off at times throughout the game, as well.
Beltran: B+
- He made one of the biggest plays in the game and is getting zero credit for it. Robbie Keane, earlier in the second half, had found space in between the RSL back line and was inside the 18. He did a move to cut back to his right foot. The goal was there for the taking but Beltran got a foot in at the very last second. HUGE play if you look back at it.
Beckerman: B
- The middle of the pitch was RSL's for long stretches, however, he made some pretty bad passes that were nearly turned into counters by LA. He cleaned it up in the second half and was a major part of why RSL was able to possess the ball for as long as they did.
Grabavoy: B-
- A pretty solid yet quite night from Ned. Doing his thing, quietly, and without much notice from writers.
Gil: A-
- Honestly, I thought Gil had possibly the best night of any RSL player but was just unlucky to not end up on the stat sheet for an assist or two. His pass in the first half that should have been finished by Paulo Junior (and then Velasquez) was something even Javi would have been jealous of. This kid just keeps improving.
Velasquez: B+
- The best way to describe what we saw from Velasquez in this game was a cross of the energy of Will Johnson, the skill of Javier Morales, and the tenacity of Fabian Espindola. If he can play like that each and every game, we've not only found ourselves a true diamond in the rough, but a solid contender for Rookie of the Year.
Espindola: B-
- Espy really struggled at times in this game. His work rate never failed, but his focus did at times. You could tell he was frustrated with his partner up top in PJ and just wasn't always on the same page as Gil and the midfield. Still, the guy was able to find the back of the net and was a rather constant threat down the left wing for RSL. If he can score on a bad night the league should really be worried.
Paulo Junior: C+
- Of all the RSL players that touched the pitch, I thought he had the worst night. While he looked to have his composure on the ball and confidence in his legs back, he still lacked that burst of speed that made him so hard to mark when he first arrived at RSL. His finishing was very sub par, as well. Just not his night. However, it was a big improvement from what we saw from him at the end of last season.
Morales: B+
- Came on and pretty much instantly the game swung in RSL's favor. The guy, even when injured, just has the ability to weave through defenders with and without the ball. his goal was the result of great passing, timing, and bravery to go into the tackle. Reports indicate that his knee is doing just fine and he shouldn't have another setback on his recovery.
Saborio: B
- We were greatly missing his size and target abilities in this game. Had he been in from the start, RSL would have found the goal in the first half as they would have had a target to whip in crosses to. LA was giving RSL the wings all the way down to their own 18. With a guy like Sabo in there, it would have spelled disaster for them.
Alvarez: NA
- He was on the field for hardly any time. The time he was on was chaotic as LA was throwing each and every player forward and had a complete disregard for shape and formation. Hard to give an assessment on Yordany when that was the case.
RSL Rating: B
- There were areas that could have been approved upon as a team, however, for the first game of the new season, with that many injuries... damn. This team looks good. Lets just hope they can get healthy and stay that way. If they can, I'm not sure any team in this league honestly can say they are better than them.

2012 Opening Kick
It's finally here!
RSL heads back out to LA, the place where the 2011 season ended, to start the 2012 version. It should be a really intriguing game, not only because of the two teams involved and their history, but because of the circumstances surrounding the game. LA plays their knockout Champions League series with TFC wrapped around this game. They play at TFC today, Wednesday, then host TFC in LA next Wednesday (3/14). Thus, LA's focus likely will not be fully on this game. They'll likely put their starters out in the TFC matches hoping to advance to the next round while resting some of them, if not all, for the RSL match. That bodes well for RSL.
On the RSL side, though, it's the injuries that are making this game extra intriguing and harder to determine. Alvaro Saborio, Javier Morales, Will Johnson, Nat Borchers, and even Chris Wingert are all listed between doubtful to out. Sabo and Javi are likely to be on the bench as they aren't 100% but they are good enough to sub on. Johnson just had a sports hernia surgery so he likely won't even be in LA for the match. Borchers is still recovering from a nagging hamstring injury and is out likely until April. Wingert, lastly, is the most likely to play. His (nasty) gash could very easily keep him out, but the wound seems to be healing really quickly. RSL would be in much better shape with him on the pitch, so hopefully he gets cleared by the doctors to play.
Thus, we could see a really strange match-up. Lots of reserves out there despite this being the beginning of the season with two top level teams. For RSL, this is what is likely to take the pitch...

Key Player for RSL: Paulo Junior
- RSL has really struggled through the preseason to find the back of the net. I think the defense and midfield has the talent, even with players missing, to get the job done. However, the offense doesn't look too promising without our target man in Alvaro Saborio. Fabian Espindola has proven time and time again that he'll be reliable up top. I'm not worried about him. The issue is can the guy next to him, replacing Sabo, step it up? Paulo lost a lot of his game last season through injury and such. From all reports, though, he is back to full health this season. If he can show that brilliance of the old Paulo out there (great speed, sleek touches, confidence on the ball, etc) then RSL's attack will be just fine. If we are relying on just Espy - who is a hell of a guy even alone but wont be able to carry RSL - then we are screwed when it comes to finding the net. This is a very early test of how deep we truly are up top.
Prediction
RSL 1 - LA Galaxy 1
- I think RSL has the ability to win this game, especially with LA likely resting players (result against TFC the deciding factor there) but just won't be able to find the net enough to punish them. A draw is a decent result, but knowing that we will likely be facing a less than full strength Galaxy and still not get the full 3 points will be disappointing.
One thing is for certain, I am absolutely excited to start the season back up!

On the RSL side, though, it's the injuries that are making this game extra intriguing and harder to determine. Alvaro Saborio, Javier Morales, Will Johnson, Nat Borchers, and even Chris Wingert are all listed between doubtful to out. Sabo and Javi are likely to be on the bench as they aren't 100% but they are good enough to sub on. Johnson just had a sports hernia surgery so he likely won't even be in LA for the match. Borchers is still recovering from a nagging hamstring injury and is out likely until April. Wingert, lastly, is the most likely to play. His (nasty) gash could very easily keep him out, but the wound seems to be healing really quickly. RSL would be in much better shape with him on the pitch, so hopefully he gets cleared by the doctors to play.
Thus, we could see a really strange match-up. Lots of reserves out there despite this being the beginning of the season with two top level teams. For RSL, this is what is likely to take the pitch...

Predictions
This coming Major League Soccer season is one that, on the surface, looks rather predictable. Everyone seems to be buying into this notion that the LA Galaxy have formed a "super team" and will just destroy the league. Even with the injuries, international call-ups, Olympics, etc. people are touting them as untouchable. I'm not buying it.
With the reintroduction of an unbalanced schedule, the Western Conference looking like the much superior side, international call-ups for world qualifiers, Olympics, etc. this MLS season will be intriguing. Which teams can handle the mass of games, not only in MLS play, but USOC and CCL will be the determining factor. As always, injuries can make or break a team (see RSL and Dallas last season) but great coaches prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As such, those teams that have strong proven leadership are what will succeed this season. It's not anything new, per say, but I believe the separation will be evident early on and that some teams will simply get left in the dust.
Predicted Final Conference Standings
Western Conference
1. Real Salt Lake
- Yeah, I'm a homer, but not one without cause. Look at this RSL team. It's stacked. The first 11, when healthy (key point), can compete with anyone. Even this vaulted unbeatable LA Galaxy team. Fabian Espindola had a bit of a coming out party last year. This year, he's only going to get better. Javier Morales, while still recovering from that nasty ankle injury, is poised to last all season and in the preseason looked to be the same old Javi. Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers, Nick Rimando, Kyle Beckerman, etc etc. This is a team that, honestly, competes at every position with the rest of the league for best player. However, it's not just the individual talent that has me sipping the RSL juice, it's the chemistry and leadership of the squad. Jason Kreis gets the best out of his players, Kyle Beckerman is the best holding mid in the league and probably one of the best captains in the league. This team is built to win. Most importantly, though, is that they won't be dealing with CCL knockout stages early on this season. USOC and CCL play will happen later on, but by that time RSL will be in full healthy (fingers crossed) and full form.
2. Seattle Sounders
- If there was one team I had to pick that I think would challenge RSL this season, it's Seattle. For whatever reason, our games with them have always featured a lot of drama. Sigi Schmid, despite the "figure", builds greats teams and this Seattle team is no exception. Rosales is my early pick for MVP of the league and players like Montero and Fernandez are top class. The one area that will hold them up this season, I believe, is goalkeeper. Losing Keller, even with his blunder issues, was a main part of their success over past years. Without him, they'll give up soft goals (no entering keepers ever have amazing first seasons) and lose ground. Add their early CCL match up with Santos and that they play on turf (aggravates injuries) and they'll come short. They'll be a damn good team, but they'll come up short.
3. FC Dallas
- I have no idea why, but a lot of people are selling on Dallas this year. People throw around Vancouver and Portland higher than them and I simply don't get it. Brek Shea, even if he is gone for the Olympics, will cause havoc again all season. They return their star in Ferreira and have talent on all parts of the pitch. They'll be damn good. Not great, but pretty damn good.
4. LA Galaxy
- If I could, I'd rate these guys last. However, I have to be honest. They have a lot of offensive talent on this team. In this league, though, that typically means it comes at a cost. And it shows itself in the defense. Yeah, the Gonzalez injury really is the biggest knock, but they have zero depth, especially on the back line. I think the long season will wear on them. Donovan, Beckham, and Keane will all be great but I just don't see how they can stop other teams from scoring on them like they did in the past two seasons.
5. Portland Timbers
- I'm not high on this team for one gigantic reason: sophomore slump potential. They have it written all over them. They came out last season and, by expansion standards, had a pretty good season. Everyone is thinking they can only go up. The problem, though, is that they are not a new commodity. There is film on the team. There are proven tactics to beat them. I think they'll slide into the playoffs (5 from each conference this season) but they'll not do much more.
6. San Jose Earthquakes
- I'm not a big fan of Frank Yallop, in fact I think he has ruined the 'quakes quite a bit. However, looking at the additions he's made this season I think they are really going to improve. They'll challenge Portland for that last Western Conference playoff spot but ultimately come short. I also think Wondo will have a much more quite season this year. No competing for the golden boot.
7. Vancouver Whitecaps
- Like LA, they've stacked up on offensive talent. Their defense? yikes. I think they'll improve (couldn't get much worse) but they'll still be off the playoffs.
8. cRapids
- Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on these guys, but its more than obvious they are in a transitional stage. The new manager wants to change the identity of the team from counters on the wings to possession. This is going to take time. They'll probably be a lot better than I have them listed here, but I really want them to be bad.
9. Chivas USA
- They should be better, but they won't be. Chivas Guadalajara is the reason to blame. This supposed partnership doesn't operate even close to what it could/should. I feel bad for Robin Fraser, he has the skills to make a great manager. I just don't see it happening at this particular club, though.
Eastern Conference
1. Chicago Fire
- A lot of people are low on Chicago. They think they'll make the playoffs, but not really do much. I think this team is built to cause havoc. Add that to the fact that they'll play a much heavier Eastern Conference schedule and this team could really turn heads. The biggest thing I see in this team is their speed. They showed at the end of last season that speed, when used correctly, will cause problems against any team, no matter their tactics. They've added the right pieces around Pappa, have Oduro and Nyarko, and a defense that isn't stellar but can get the job done. This is my surprise team of the season.
2. Sporting Kansas City
- Sporting really made a strong push at the end of last season. They looked destined to make a similar run to the 2009 RSL MLS Champions. It fell short, but they laid the foundation for a really good future. They are young, and because so I think they'll continue to struggle this year, but they still will be a side to fear. With their setup (no CCL, playing in the East, etc) I also think they are built to be really good in the playoffs.
3. Toronto FC
- I'm likely too high on this team but whatever. They showed flashes last season of a team that really could compete with anyone in this league. I want them to be good because that fan base up there is really fun when they are into the games. I think they are built to finally make the playoffs and, if the draw goes there way (read hosting warm weather teams) then they could really make a run.
4. Houston Dynamo
- This team is hard to figure out. They are going to have a season much like Kansas City did last year with a heavy road schedule to open things before getting their own place and having a load of home games. I think Brad Davis will continue to be a force to reckon with and that their style (physical) will reward them in close games.
5. New York Red Bulls
- New York has loads of talent. Everyone knows this. Putting that talent together, though, looks to be rather difficult. I think they'll be better than they were last year, but really will struggle to make the playoffs again. I see them sliding in then possibly making some noise, but overall having another disappointing season compared to what their expectations are.
6. DC United
- I want Ben Olsen to be successful and, honestly, they could be a lot better than I have them listed. However, I just don't see it. I think DeRo will be the life and blood of this team, once again, but that it will ultimately fall short. I am probably way off on this one, but it's just my gut reaction.
7. Philadelphia Union
- I have no idea where to put this team. I had them as high as 2 or 3 in this conference and then they were right there with Montreal at the bottom the next. It's just too hard to figure them out. I think they'll really struggle. Trading LeToux, even with the contract issues, was stupid in my opinion. I expect the East, especially spots 3-8, to be really tight, but someone has to finish at the bottom.
8. New England Revolution
- I want to put this team higher but I can't justify it. My whole argument for pushing them up was results in the preseason tournament against LA, New York, and RSL. However, the preseason has constantly proven itself to be a horrible gauge (at least when using results as the basis). I see talent on the team, and I see them being really good in two or three years, but not this year. It's a new group of coaches that need to learn on the job. That typically doesn't produce stellar results.
9. Columbus Crew
- I see them struggling this year, a lot. They have decent talent on the field, but I think the core group is too old and that they'll burn out as the season progresses. It's time for Columbus to clean house and go into transition. Maybe they'll start that this season.
10. Montreal Impact
- They are an expansion team, what more can be expected? They have some decent pieces on the team, but building chemistry takes a whole lot longer than the time they've been allotted. They'll be 10 times better at the end of the season than they are at the start, I guarantee that.
Trophy Predictions
US Open Cup: Seattle Sounders
- They'll buy... I mean win it again. Good for them. Nobody really seems to care.
CONCACAF Champions League: Santos Laguna
- I think LA will find a way past TFC but fall, like Seattle, to Santos and that Santos will win the whole thing. I see them playing either Monterrey or Morelia in the final. Like last year, I expect MLS to do a push of LA/Seattle saying we, as MLS fans, should support them. In response to that idea I give a big middle finger. I don't want those teams to succeed where we faltered!
Supporters Shield: Chicago Fire
- Playing in the East will be the determining factor. They won't be better than RSL, Seattle, or even LA on the field, but because they get to play a team like Montreal three times as opposed to RSL/Seattle/LA only playing them once they will succeed.
MLS Cup: no idea
- This all hinges on form right before the tournament. All you have to do this season is finish in the top five of your own conference to make the playoffs. Ten teams will have a shot at it (yeah, more than half...) If I had to pick, I'd go with Sporting. They don't have CCL on their plate and I seriously doubt they take USOC seriously. If they can't win the SS, I expect them to make a run in the playoffs. Playing on the eastern side, like in the regular season, will benefit them greatly.
Wrap it up
- I really think this is going to be a really fun MLS season. I see the East really benefiting from this new setup and that the West, also because of the setup, will simply bang itself up throughout the season and not be able to walk away with the two big trophies.

RSL 2012
2011 was a year of great emotional swings for Real Salt Lake. They started the season as "the team" in the league. They proved this in the opening weeks of league play. Then they looked to broaden that label to not only the league, but the region. That CONCACAF Champions League final series between RSL and Monterrey will live in the minds of RSL fans for quite some time, probably forever. It was, in hindsight, an epitome of the season as a whole. Falling short in so many different tournaments was the mantra of RSL. They were a team many feared, but at the end of the day RSL didn't add a single trophy (save the RMC) to their collection.
2011 was a great season, don't get me wrong. It was a joy to watch the team overcome great obstacles and still fight for the top prizes. It was, at the same time, very exhausting and a bit disappointing. This wasn't only the feeling of the fans, but it seems to be how many of the players and staff felt as well. 2011 was a season to remember, but also a season to forget. It's strange to say, but it makes sense if you experienced it. There were so many highs but also so many lows and separating the two is impossible. The joy of reaching the CCL Final has to also be mentioned in the gloom of watching Monterrey win at the RioT. Watching Javi return to the pitch also has to be associated with his horrific injury. Dismantling Seattle in the playoffs has to also be associated with losing an injury plagued match in LA. etc etc. 2011 was almost equally as depressing as it was exciting. The good was always tainted with the bad, no matter the scenario.
The question thus for 2012 is "what will change". Will RSL continue to be a top team in the league but fall short? Will they take a step back? After a couple of years of being near the top, history would suggest that keeping this high profile is something not very likely to happen. Or, will they defy those odds, and not only continue to be a top team, but rise to the very top and bring some trophies to Salt Lake? It's hard to answer this, obviously, but many can speculate.
Additions and subtractions from the team have been plentiful this year. While the core of the team has remained very much intact, the depth of this team has taken on a completely new image. In the past two years RSL looked to keep pat with their personnel from top to bottom. A few minor changes here and there, but mostly the team looked exactly the same. 2012 is different. Numerous players have been traded, let go, or retired and thus made the depth for RSL 2012 a bit of a mystery. Has RSL brought in enough pieces, and more importantly the right pieces, to not only restore what those players gone added to the team, but also improve upon it? That question can't be answered for quite some time, but a look at each of the pieces can give us an idea.
DEPARTURES
Robbie Russel - Traded to DC United
- Russell was a key component of RSL's defense in 2011. The guy started multiple games and made it so that the rotation of the 3 outside backs kept our defense somewhat fresh (injuries hampered that). Russell was also aging quite a bit. His legs weren't all the way there, his marking was suspect at times, and his speed dwindled on a daily basis. Losing him will sting, but the Russell we had at the end of 2011 was nothing like the Russell we had come to expect.
Andy Williams - Retired
- Andy was the last remaining original player for RSL. I, along with many others, were hopeful that he had at least one more season in him. This was not only for soccer reasons, but so that he could get the respectful sendoff he deserved. Sadly, with the salary cap crunch, Andy was forced into an awkward situation. I am very glad it worked out in a way that he was able to stick around. However, I'm sad that I won't be able to cheer #77 on the pitch. Losing Andy wasn't just an emotional blow, though. The guy brought a lot of leadership and veteran qualities that are going to be incredibly difficult to replace. He wasn't supposed to be a regular starter in 2011, but was forced into that with injuries and suspensions. Thus, what we lost on paper (a guy with a lot of starts and minutes in 2011) isn't as bad as it looks. He'll be greatly missed, but it won't be all because of what he brought on the pitch.
Arturo Alvarez - Released
- On paper, Alvarez coming to RSL in 2011 was a huge confidence booster. Then the paper was replaced with actual game time and, well, it was proven wrong. Alvarez was proof that good players can be a bad fit. In our system of play, players like Arturo Alvarez are going to struggle. His inability to play with his right foot and his poor defending skills lead him to be a permanent bench warmer or, even worse, a guy not even in the 18. Alvarez will make a great addition to a team that plays wing attacking soccer and doesn't emphasize team defense. At RSL, though, he won't be missed at all.
Blake Wagner - Released
- Wagner was a mid-season pickup that never really got going. The guy had his chances to prove himself, but fell short badly. The guy will find a job on a lower MLS team at outside back. When he does, we know where to attack that team's defense. Wagner just isn't RSL quality.
Nelson Gonzalez - Loan Option not Extended
- Nelson was one of my hopeful players to make a splash in 2011. The kid has great feet, especially his left, and the ability to slide in and out of spaces with ease. His lack of discipline, however, lead to his demise. He came into the 2011 preseason camp out of shape. Something that will get you right on into Kreis' dog house. Once he finally seemed to be coming around, though, he hit in the injury bug. He never really recovered from this. In the end, it just didn't make sense for RSL to keep the guy. Can't say I blame the staff at all. In the end, we lost nothing in terms of 2011 RSL quality by letting Gonzo go.
Collen Warner - Picked by Montreal in Expansion Draft
- In 2010 Warner was the surprise player for RSL. The kid showed some great glimpses of talent during the season, especially in CCL group play, and looked to be a player for RSL to mold. In 2011, with the injury of Javier Morales, it seemed that Warner's time had come to prove himself. Sadly, he didn't. While a good player, Warner never really took advantage of the opportunities presented to him in 2011. He'll be a starter at Montreal this year, likely, but we won't really be missing anything but occasional late sub minutes by not having him in 2012.
Raushawn McKenzie - Released
- McKenzie was the 4th best CB on a team that carried 4 CB's. While he wasn't a bad player by any regards, he also wasn't a good one. He also was the victim of those 3 CB's in front of him. Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers, and Chris Schuler are all very good players. The first 2 are 2 of the best defenders in this league (if not the best). McKenzie was there for training purposes and the occasional bench appearance. Losing him really did nothing to RSL 2012.
Overall:
- RSL lost 2 guys that started on occasion, 2 guys that didn't pan out despite high hopes, and 2 guys that weren't RSL quality. The losses of Williams and Russell will hurt in 2012, especially early on. Those 2 guys were veteran leaders that knew what was expected of them. However, it was time for RSL to move on.

Eduardo "Lalo" Fernandez - GK, Homegrown

- Lalo is a product of the RSL academy in Arizona. The kid went to Uruguay to play for a club and then returned to the states. He is a homegrown player (thus meaning he won't count against the cap) and one that many say could be great for the club in the future. The key word there is future. Don't expect anything from Lalo this year. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if a loan with a lower team is lined up once the season starts.
Leone Cruz - DF, traded for with Seattle

- Cruz is a rather unique situation. While we did trade Seattle for his rights, Cruz has already trained and played in some reserve matches with RSL. Seattle originally drafted him in 2011 but it didn't work out. Seattle released the player (with keeping his rights) midway through the season. RSL was unable to acquire him from Seattle during the season and worked a deal to get him by trading their first supplemental draft pick to Seattle. The guy has the benefit of already having played with RSL and thus his chances of actually sticking are higher. However, if he didn't pan out with Seattle and wasn't a must pickup at the end of last year for RSL, he can't be that amazing. He is likely competing for that CB spot that McKenzie vacated.
Diogo de Almeida - DF, drafted 24th Overall

- Diogo is part of the recruits to hopefully replace Robbie Russell and, more likely, Blake Wagner. An outside back is desperatly needed on this squad, so Almedia's chances of sticking around are a lot higher than other players. I'm not certain on this, but I believe that he has a green card worked out already thus making it so he wouldn't count as an international. Something that RSL, as you'll see this year, is really going to have an issue with in terms of bringing players in.

- Enzo seems to be the perfect RSL player. The kid works hard, doesn't care for the star treatment, loves the passing style game, works hard, has great fitness, and did I mention he works hard? The kid is the RSL/Jason Kreis player. I have a lot of hope for this kid, he could be something very special. Watching his highlight packages and a few games from UNC at the College Cup, I know this kid can be a real addition to the squad. Being realistic, though, is a must. Enzo isn't going to be starting for RSL in 2012 much if at all. He is a project, like many of these guys, but one that has a HUGE upside. If there is one player to be excited about in these additions, it's Enzo.
Benjamin Ubierna - MF, Supplemental Draft
- I can't seem to find much video of Ubierna, but from what I've read and seen he is a bigger midfielder that likes to go down the wings. The theme of a lot of these additions for RSL are speed. Ubierna looks to be the perfect mold of that. His highlight package on mlssoccer.com is pretty lame, but it does show his ability to get in behind the defense and whip in a ball. I doubt this kid will be able to make the final squad, but would love to see more players like him come in on trial in the future.
Sebastian Velazquez - MF, Supplemental Draft

- Velazquez is a very interesting addition for RSL. By most accounts, this kid has a lot of skill on the ball. His size is the obvious issue, among other things, and whether he'll have the ability to stick in this league is a huge question mark. However, it is important to note, the other player that RSL had on their team that was drafted out of junior college was none other than Yura Movsisyan. Sebastian, from all I've read and seen, looks to have enough skill to compete with anybody in this league. How he'll react to being hit by players like Pablow Masterwanky and the entire Houston Dynamo squad is a huge issue. I want the kid to work out. He was on the same youth team as Enzo Martinez and is proof that there are a whole lot more ways to becoming a pro than the typical big club-college-academy routes.
Emiliano Bonfigli - FW, Supplemental Draft

- Bonfigli, like Ubierna, is a player that many overlooked in the draft because of his status as an international. I really like that this kid has experience as a professional already. Having played in Argentina will help him greatly. At the end of the day, though, RSL really has their hands tied with international players. Unless he stands out as an amazing player at camp, he'll get past up.

- Wes reminds me a lot of Blake Wagner. A defender dropped by Vancouver that has talent, but probably isn't an MLS quality player. Obviously Garth and Jason see something in him, but not being able to stick on the worst defense in the league in 2011 is not a good sign. I doubt anything comes from this guy. His biggest positive is that he won't count as an international player. It looks like he was used as a midfielder much more by Vancouver, but it's doubtful he could crack the RSL midfield.
Terukazu Tanaka - DF
- Tanaka is the product of the trip Garth took to Asia this off-season to scout talent. He is a very unlikely addition to the team as he would require an international slot. Many accounts of him (from J-League watchers) are that he is a decent player but nothing too exciting. Maybe he is a diamond-in-the-rough, but I doubt it. I'll be surprised if he makes the senior squad.

- Neal has a very interesting resume. An English player that couldn't really find his way there, bounced over the US. He couldn't land with an MLS team initially, so he tried his luck with Orlando City. He has been one of their better players and looks like he might have the skill to make it in MLS. The issue here, once again, is that he would likely (I'd have to double check) occupy an international slot if added to the team.

- Steele is much like Neal. A player from Ireland who couldn't really find a spot there, jumped the pond to the US. In Steele's case, though, this happened all the way back in 2004. He has since played for numerous clubs, both indoor and out, around the country. He has never played for an MLS club and that scares me. If he has been here since '04, he should have been able to find a spot if he had the talent. This looks to be your typical preseason training dummy. Nothing to see here.
Overall:
- Don't be surprised if not a single one of these players is part of RSL 2012. If by chance one of them does make the squad, also don't be surprised if you never see them suit up for the first team.
CONCLUSION
- As of right now, just looking on paper, we haven't done much to replace what we lost. It's a scary thought, but RSL honestly didn't add anybody of note this off season. That doesn't mean, though, that this team is going to be worse than last years. While that is a very real possibility, these players are unknown. That blade cuts two ways. They could be great players or they could be awful, we don't really know yet.
I'm hopeful that it'll be a positive year. That these changes were done in an attempt to not only make this team get much younger, but get more fit, more athletic, and most importantly add more speed. The glaring issue from 2011, if I had to pick just one, would be the lack of speed on the squad. Team's defended RSL with an incredibly high line, clogging the middle, and countering down the wings because they knew we didn't have the speed to threaten them. The lose of Robbie Findley killed us in 2011. While Garson won't flat out say it, the objective in 2012 is to not only find a replacement speedy striker (Paulo Junior healthy fits that bill) but to have a lot more speed in the middle to punish team that think they can just clog up our passing lanes and play a high back line.
This team, even without any of the additions, is one of the best in the league.

I'm hopeful that 2012 RSL will be even better than 2011 RSL. This squad, without the pressure of CCL early and a huge target on it's back can thrive.

2011 was a great season, don't get me wrong. It was a joy to watch the team overcome great obstacles and still fight for the top prizes. It was, at the same time, very exhausting and a bit disappointing. This wasn't only the feeling of the fans, but it seems to be how many of the players and staff felt as well. 2011 was a season to remember, but also a season to forget. It's strange to say, but it makes sense if you experienced it. There were so many highs but also so many lows and separating the two is impossible. The joy of reaching the CCL Final has to also be mentioned in the gloom of watching Monterrey win at the RioT. Watching Javi return to the pitch also has to be associated with his horrific injury. Dismantling Seattle in the playoffs has to also be associated with losing an injury plagued match in LA. etc etc. 2011 was almost equally as depressing as it was exciting. The good was always tainted with the bad, no matter the scenario.
The question thus for 2012 is "what will change". Will RSL continue to be a top team in the league but fall short? Will they take a step back? After a couple of years of being near the top, history would suggest that keeping this high profile is something not very likely to happen. Or, will they defy those odds, and not only continue to be a top team, but rise to the very top and bring some trophies to Salt Lake? It's hard to answer this, obviously, but many can speculate.
Additions and subtractions from the team have been plentiful this year. While the core of the team has remained very much intact, the depth of this team has taken on a completely new image. In the past two years RSL looked to keep pat with their personnel from top to bottom. A few minor changes here and there, but mostly the team looked exactly the same. 2012 is different. Numerous players have been traded, let go, or retired and thus made the depth for RSL 2012 a bit of a mystery. Has RSL brought in enough pieces, and more importantly the right pieces, to not only restore what those players gone added to the team, but also improve upon it? That question can't be answered for quite some time, but a look at each of the pieces can give us an idea.
DEPARTURES
Robbie Russel - Traded to DC United
- Russell was a key component of RSL's defense in 2011. The guy started multiple games and made it so that the rotation of the 3 outside backs kept our defense somewhat fresh (injuries hampered that). Russell was also aging quite a bit. His legs weren't all the way there, his marking was suspect at times, and his speed dwindled on a daily basis. Losing him will sting, but the Russell we had at the end of 2011 was nothing like the Russell we had come to expect.
Andy Williams - Retired
- Andy was the last remaining original player for RSL. I, along with many others, were hopeful that he had at least one more season in him. This was not only for soccer reasons, but so that he could get the respectful sendoff he deserved. Sadly, with the salary cap crunch, Andy was forced into an awkward situation. I am very glad it worked out in a way that he was able to stick around. However, I'm sad that I won't be able to cheer #77 on the pitch. Losing Andy wasn't just an emotional blow, though. The guy brought a lot of leadership and veteran qualities that are going to be incredibly difficult to replace. He wasn't supposed to be a regular starter in 2011, but was forced into that with injuries and suspensions. Thus, what we lost on paper (a guy with a lot of starts and minutes in 2011) isn't as bad as it looks. He'll be greatly missed, but it won't be all because of what he brought on the pitch.
Arturo Alvarez - Released
- On paper, Alvarez coming to RSL in 2011 was a huge confidence booster. Then the paper was replaced with actual game time and, well, it was proven wrong. Alvarez was proof that good players can be a bad fit. In our system of play, players like Arturo Alvarez are going to struggle. His inability to play with his right foot and his poor defending skills lead him to be a permanent bench warmer or, even worse, a guy not even in the 18. Alvarez will make a great addition to a team that plays wing attacking soccer and doesn't emphasize team defense. At RSL, though, he won't be missed at all.
Blake Wagner - Released
- Wagner was a mid-season pickup that never really got going. The guy had his chances to prove himself, but fell short badly. The guy will find a job on a lower MLS team at outside back. When he does, we know where to attack that team's defense. Wagner just isn't RSL quality.
Nelson Gonzalez - Loan Option not Extended
- Nelson was one of my hopeful players to make a splash in 2011. The kid has great feet, especially his left, and the ability to slide in and out of spaces with ease. His lack of discipline, however, lead to his demise. He came into the 2011 preseason camp out of shape. Something that will get you right on into Kreis' dog house. Once he finally seemed to be coming around, though, he hit in the injury bug. He never really recovered from this. In the end, it just didn't make sense for RSL to keep the guy. Can't say I blame the staff at all. In the end, we lost nothing in terms of 2011 RSL quality by letting Gonzo go.
Collen Warner - Picked by Montreal in Expansion Draft
- In 2010 Warner was the surprise player for RSL. The kid showed some great glimpses of talent during the season, especially in CCL group play, and looked to be a player for RSL to mold. In 2011, with the injury of Javier Morales, it seemed that Warner's time had come to prove himself. Sadly, he didn't. While a good player, Warner never really took advantage of the opportunities presented to him in 2011. He'll be a starter at Montreal this year, likely, but we won't really be missing anything but occasional late sub minutes by not having him in 2012.
Raushawn McKenzie - Released
- McKenzie was the 4th best CB on a team that carried 4 CB's. While he wasn't a bad player by any regards, he also wasn't a good one. He also was the victim of those 3 CB's in front of him. Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers, and Chris Schuler are all very good players. The first 2 are 2 of the best defenders in this league (if not the best). McKenzie was there for training purposes and the occasional bench appearance. Losing him really did nothing to RSL 2012.
Overall:
- RSL lost 2 guys that started on occasion, 2 guys that didn't pan out despite high hopes, and 2 guys that weren't RSL quality. Hate Week - RMC Style
RSL plays the cRapids this Friday - ESPN's Game of the Week - in what is sure to be a heated match. RSL is in a bit of a slump, the cRapids are back on the rise after a rough stretch. However, in this rivalry game, you can throw everything out the window in terms of the season. History has shown that this game will be incredibly dramatic and played hard til the final whistle. For RSL, it's a chance to right the ship with a big win (or even draw) and all but lock in that third overall spot. For the cRapids, its a chance to move up into the higher wild card seed and come into form at the end of the season. One thing is for sure: this game is going to be wild
This match is huge. If you ask a supporter of either side they'll tell you the same thing "If my team could only win one/two games this season, it would be this one". There is no love lost between the two sides, not even the players. It is one of those truly heated rivalries that you typically only see in college or high school sports now-a-days. The fans, the players, the organizations, etc. They all hate each other. It's awesome. It's what sports, when it really comes down to it, is truly all about. Us against them.
Because of this heated nature, this game is sure to be a bit chippy. Hopefully the ref is understanding of the fact and calls his game accordingly. He shouldn't be quick to the cards, but he shouldn't just let things go, either. It's a very thin line that he'll have to find a way to walk. The hope, for both sides, is that he doesn't play a significant role in the game itself. There is plenty of hatred out there, we don't need to bring in some extra guys.
3 Keys for an RSL Victory
1. Use the emotions of the match correctly.
- We've seen what high emotions can do to this team, both good and bad. They can cause this team, when pressed against the wall, to play incredibly great soccer. Hustle, grit, tenacity, and energy can all be derived from the emotions that are sure to be in this one. However, these emotions can have negative consequences as well. We've seen RSL succumb to the cheap shots, dirty play, and ultimately ejections of a high intensity match. These emotions have to be bridled. RSL needs to play with - as Dunseth loves to call it - a controlled anger.
2. Contain the speed of Cummings and Nyassi
- Speed. Both these players have loads of it. RSL's defense has been more than shaky the last couple of games. To right the ship in this one is more than necessary, it's vital. Cummings, if given space, will burn the RSL defense. The key is to keep him in front of the back-line. He isn't anywhere near as dangerous once that happens. Nyassi is the same way. Tremendous speed and will burn you in open space. If he is forced to play at a defense instead of behind them, though, he loses a lot of his edge. Still great players, but they can be limited if defended properly.
3. The Javi to Espy Connection
- It's no secret that these tow players really play well with each other. Espy, in particular, seems to really step his game up once Javier is on the pitch. With Javi back from injury and playing beyond what most people expected, I'm hoping we see that good old Argentine flair return on the big stage.

- This game is always won in the midfield. Though it comes down to the last minute a lot of times, it's the midfield for each team that does the work for the length of the game to set those last minute heroics up. Without Beckerman, RSL will really need Alvarez to play a huge match. Simple, calm, cool, and collective. If he can do those things and make the big tackles, RSL can win this game.

Because of this heated nature, this game is sure to be a bit chippy. Hopefully the ref is understanding of the fact and calls his game accordingly. He shouldn't be quick to the cards, but he shouldn't just let things go, either. It's a very thin line that he'll have to find a way to walk. The hope, for both sides, is that he doesn't play a significant role in the game itself. There is plenty of hatred out there, we don't need to bring in some extra guys.

Rock Bottom? PLEASE!?
RSL got their butts handed to them by the expansion side Vancouver Whitecaps last night. Sure, the officiating was suspect and RSL was without a few key players, but those are just excuses to cover up the truth of the matter. RSL should be able to, even with that many players missing, handle an expansion side. In fact, Vancouver didn't even use all of their starters so it could be argued that the match was level in that department. So, at the end of the day, RSL got beat by probably the worst team in the league this year. All I can hope is that this is rock bottom. With two games left on the season and the playoffs around the corner, it's time for this team to right things or they will push the Red Sox for worst ending to the season of 2011.
A lot of excuses are being thrown around by RSL fans and media about this one. Missing players. Officiating. Unfair scheduling. Turf. etc. In the end, RSL didn't deserve to win this game. I don't know how anyone could argue they did, or that they even deserved a draw. RSL looked the worse side of the two, which is incredibly telling at this time of the year. It's the end of the season, teams are really starting to come into form around the league. Seattle, LA, New York, Kansas City, etc. These teams are clicking, showing defensive power, and know how to finish when given a chance. RSL, on the other hand, seems to be losing everything. The defense that was billed as the best in the league has given up 12 goals in 4 games. The midfield that was supposed to be the MLS's version of Barcelona suddenly can't string together any passes that have purpose. And the offense? Good lord, its pathetic. RSL is simply in a free-fall right now with teams having zero sympathy upon them.
Man of the Match: Camillo
It's hard to pick a man of the match in this one considering neither side looked incredibly good on the night. Camillo slotted away the two penalties and was a thorn in RSL's side a lot of the night.
Wankers of the Match: RSL's Whole Team
Simply pathetic. Every player, every position, every coach, all of them were bad. Rimando got beat on his near post once again. Wingert is not the same player he was before injury. Borchers and Olave were out of position more times than they weren't. Schuler is so unorthodox it's painful to watch on turf. Russell couldn't defend a person standing still. Grabavoy had possibly his worst RSL game ever. Warner, even before the red, was simply terrible. Andy would have brilliant touches and then pass the ball to nobody afterwards. Gil is not a forward. Paulo Junior's 15 minutes of fame are long done. Arnoux and Agorsor were two of the brighter spots in this game - which just goes to show how bad things are. These 2 probably wouldn't make the roster for half the teams in this league. Terrible: RSL

Fixing our problems, Starting from the back
RSL heads to Vancouver for a match that was originally scheduled back in the middle of July. Because of some poor weather, a grass pitch laid over a turf one, and mostly Vancouver valuing a friendly over a league game this match will now be on quite possibly the worst date possible for RSL. It's almost funny as it is a sign of just how bad the luck is with Real right now. They will be missing close to an entire lineup (11 players) because of injury, suspension, national team duty, and visa issues. This game should be one that RSL simply dominates as Vancouver is arguably the worst team in the league. What is likely to happen, though, is that RSL will struggle with a reserve filled lineup. One thing I can almost guarantee you, it ain't going to be an attractive match to watch.
RSL is on a 3 game losing streak with 3 games left on the season. You don't want to enter the playoffs in the form that RSL is in right now. Thus, this game, I feel, is the beginning of this teams playoff form. They can either right things on this ship, or set course for some really dangerous and likely short-lived (in terms of games played) waters. For RSL to right the ship, a lot of things need to be worked on. Specifically for this game, these three things must done if RSL wants to get any points:
1. Keep Hassli in check
- The big man for Vancouver plays a very similar role as Saborio for us. He is the target man that releases pressure from their middle and back line. Having seen a few Whitecap matches, there is a common theme: Hassli initiates the offense. Borchers and the rest of the back line have to make sure to keep Hassli in check, force him into quick touches, and not let him have room inside the 18 when a cross is whipped in. Stop him and you hinder a lot of the offensive abilities of the Whitecaps.
2. Team Defense - Win the ball higher
- Vancouver's defense and midfield are decent, but they tend to be sloppy with the ball when put under any form of pressure. Thus, RSL would do itself a huge favor by implementing a high line of defense and working as a unit. In order to achieve this, the strikers for RSL have to have a high work-rate and force the defense of Vancouver into rushed decisions. PJ is a sure thing to start up top, so his work-rate has to be increased tenfold from what its been since he has returned from injury. We need the old PJ that was willing to work hard and use that burst of speed.
3. Quicker Ball Movement
- If RSL wants to have any success all at come the end of this season and playoff time, they need to start moving the ball better. This means a lot of things, firstly is that the actual ball movement needs to be quicker. Instead of taking 3 or 4 touches to get a pass off from the defensive line, players like Borchers and Wingert need to be able to do it in 1 or 2. The quicker we move the ball forward, the more space our midfield and forwards will have to work with. This also means there needs to be better movement by the players off the ball. Borchers and Wingert can't make a 1 or 2 touch pass if the player they are passing to isn't into the space needed by that time. RSL, especially lately, has become very stagnant off the ball. This has to be improved upon if we are going to win games come late October and November.

I think our defense is a whole lot better than they've played lately and will be the main focus of this match. These last 3 games will be about building upon one third of the pitch and then moving forward. In Vancouver, it's about fixing the defense. At cRapids it'll be midfield play, and hopefully against Portland we can get the strikers hot again.

Tale of Two Teams
RSL found a way to lose, yet again, down in LA this weekend. Despite having a first half advantage and playing a whole lot better than they have in their past two and a half matches, RSL came out of LA with 0 points. When looking back on this game, something really jumped out at me: who these teams are. RSL started this season wanting to be the best MLS team of all time, winning multiple trophies, and proving its depth. In reality, we're an above average team that can't figure out how to grind out results lately.
Who RSL actually is: Sloppy, slumping team
-Watching this game, these last few games, hell this whole season has been an emotional roller-coaster. RSL started, as they did in this game, as a team with high hopes. They look to have the talent and skill to accomplish them as well. I mean, Javier Morales and Fabian Espindola, when on, are next to impossible to stop in this league. Those two can simply tear teams apart. Olave and Borchers in the back? Forget about getting any goals there. On paper, this team is as solid as they come. Strong in every position and depth on the bench to back it. Too bad paper isn't where the game is played...
In reality, RSL has shown (and this game really epitomized it) a complete lack of mental strength in tough situations and a lack of discipline overall. The first LA goal was a text book 2011 RSL mess up. Olave has Barrett shielded off, Rimando has a line to the ball, it should be easy pickings. But, for whatever reason, not only does RSL fail to execute, but they allow Barrett to sneak around, chip a ball from feet away, and score what has to go down as one of the ugliest conceded goals of the year. Not to be outdone, only minutes later our defense showed again its lack of discipline late. Poor defending on Beckham's original set piece allowed Dunivant the opportunity to get the ball on the far post. Some terrible luck and poor marking/positioning made it so Borchers scored an own goal via assist from Chris Wingert.
Stuff like this hasn't been happening all year, but RSL has really struggled this season to put it all together. The offense, the defense, set piece defending, midfield movement, etc. Something is always failing and usually destroys this team in the 90 minutes. RSL, in actuality, is a team that lacks composure and mental endurance. Kreis is still figuring the job out - its going to take quite awhile - and his team is proof of where he needs to improve. It's a collective deficiency in this team. Everyone is partly to blame for why we have zero trophies, are not in the Supporters Shield race, and will be praying to god we somehow can make a run in November. The hopes for this team were rightly high, the execution has been below par.
Who RSL wants to be: LA Galaxy
- What made this game much more painful was watching LA execute what RSL set out to do this season. The Gals have proven themselves to be a really really good team - especially at home. They don't drop points when they are in a position to get them, and they make a team fight like hell to even get one point off of them. Their team, even with a substantial amount of money invested in few players, has shown itself to have great depth. They are very much in CCL still and look to probably be able to advance to the knockout phases. They've all but locked up the Supporters Shield and look to be the team to beat going into MLS Cup.
When the season started, this was the team everyone thought RSL was going to be. Hard to beat at home. Hard to even get a point off of. Solid defense that doesn't make bad mistakes. Enough discipline to not get suspensions and ejections. Depth to deal with international duty and injuries. Etc. etc. LA has shown itself to be what we wanted to be. Their win in this game essentially sealed the deal for the Supporters Shield. So, RSL, you got to see first hand what it takes to close out on something you set your sights on.
Man of the Match: David Beckham
- I really don't like the guy and his whinny antics, but he was largely responsible for the two goals LA scored on RSL. His set pieces and ability to place a ball in a dangerous position were too much for our defense to handle in the second half. Again, I hate the guys play, but have to give credit where it is due.
Wanker of the Match: Jason Kreis
- I struggled with which RSL player/coach to put here. Rimando deserves a lot of blame for his complete lack of effort on the first LA goal. Borchers scored a game winning OG, that's never good. Wingert had the game winning assist - pretty rare. Chris Brown is in charge of the defense as a whole, which doesn't look too great right now. etc etc. In the end, though, it falls on the manager - it's part of having the job. Kreis team has gone from super club to faltering foe at the exact wrong time. While he struggles to figure out this team, he needs to really take a long hard look in the mirror. RSL has given up 10 goals in its last 4 games. For a coach who harps on defense as a team, something isn't going right. Oh, and his subbing patterns in the last few games? horrific.
Moment of the Match: Taking off Espy
- With a yellow card already to his name and his history of getting chippy in tight situations, it somewhat made sense for Kreis to take off Espindola. What didn't add up, however, was that Espindola was already suspended for the next match with that yellow - something Kreis better have known - and was pretty much our only form of attack in the final third. Once Espy went off, we had nothing up top. Paulo Junior continued his run of losing form after injury. In fact, I think Paulo spent more time in our middle and defense third chasing balls he lost rather than being the outlet he is supposed to be. It sucks to say this, but Espy is this teams attack. Without him out there, we're not dangerous at all against a team that has even a somewhat decent defense.
Looking Forward: Vancouver Makeup with Scrubs
- This Thursday RSL will travel up to Vancouver for the makeup game from earlier this year. It couldn't come at a worse time for RSL. Multiple players will be missing this one for international duty, suspensions, and injuries. In fact, I'm not 100% positive RSL will be able to have 18 players to put on the game day roster. Missing will be: Alexandre (Haiti), A Alvarez (El Salvador), Beckerman (USA), Beltran (injury), Espindola (suspension), Gonzalez (injury), Johnson (Canada), Reynish (injury), Saborio (Costa Rica) and maybe a few others that I'm missing. Just don't give up another hat-trick
RSL heads to LA this weekend and I have zero reason to be optimistic about the game. RSL, in their last two and half games, has looked anemic. We can't defend, we can't attack, we can't really do anything. Add that to losing one of the most vital pieces to our team - Beckerman - and there is plenty of reason to be doubtful of points this weekend at LA. The Galaxy are riding high, coming off a huge midweek win against Morelia in CCL action and have tons of momentum on their side. Unless something drastically changes for both teams, this game could very easily be quite one-sided.
I think the best RSL can hope for in this game is a draw. To achieve that, they'll have to play one of the best games of the season. Here are three key areas to RSL having any form of success at the Home Depot Center:
1. Don't give up many set pieces
- LA has Beckham on their team, a guy who can pick out any single players head on a set piece. Or, if he is in the mood, pick out the top corner on a shot of his own. RSL can't let LA have multiple set pieces in this game or they will be burned on them. Highlights of LA's goals this year are filled with corner kicks and dead balls roughly 20-40 yards away. Our defense is rather shaky on these, so avoiding them is key.
2. Limit space for LA on the ball
- LA's midfield is absolutely stacked. Between Beckham, Juninho, and Donovan RSL will have their hands full. To disrupt their play, RSL's midfield has to do a lot of movement off of the ball and be willing to close space out wide. In the last two games we've really lacked composure on closing down players space quick enough and have been burned for it. LA has better players than DC and Chicago, so its obvious this area needs massive improvement.
3. Be willing to make a dangerous pass
- In the offensive end, RSL is going to have to be willing to take some risks if they want to score on a very stout LA defense. A lot of this responsibility will fall on the attacking mid - likely Luis Gil. Instead of making the predictable pass every time to simply keep possession, Gil needs to be willing to try something a bit more creative and dangerous. We do this, and we might be able to catch their defense off guard.
